The CSS Albemarle Gets a Commander

JANUARY 15, 1864:

Secretary Mallory ordered Commander James W. Cooke to command the ironclad CSS Albemarle in North Carolina and to finish her as quickly as possible. Under Cooke's command, she was rapidly completed and readied for service and played a major role in Albemarle Sound from April until she was sunk in October.
