JANUARY 29TH, 1864:
The ironclad USS Patapsco reported to Dahlgren after an extended reconnaissance of the Wilmington River, Georgia. He only engaged sharpshooters. He concluded: "From what I can see and learn, an original expedition against Savannah at this time by a combined movement of land and sea forces would probably be successful."
Though the Navy kept the city under close blockade, troops were not available and it wasn't until the arrval of Sherman's Army after his March to the Sea that the city fell.
