150 Years Ago: August 17, 1863: Ironclad Attack on Charleston Renews
AUGUST 17TH
Seven ironclads and eight gunboats renew their attack on Charleston. The naval battery ashore on Morris Island contributed another 300 shells. Much fire was concentrated on Fort Sumter.
** USS Crocus ran aground at night and was wrecked at Bodie's Island, North Carolina.
