August 14, 1862: Engagement on Black River, S.C.

AUGUST 14TH, 1862:  The USS Pocahontas, Lt. George  B. Balch, and steam tug Treaty, Acting Lt. Baxter, on an expedition up the Black River from Georgetown, S.C., exchanged fire with Confederate troops at close range along both banks of the river for a distance of 20 miles in an unsuccessful attempt to capture steamer Nina.

JULY 7TH, 1861:  Confederate privateer Jefferson Davis captured American schooner S.J. Waring about 150 miles off Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

**  USS Pocahontas, Commander Benjamin M. Dove, fired on and damaged CSS George Page in Aquia Creek, Virginia.

155 Years Ago: Navy Ships Ordered to Provision Fort Sumter

APRIL 5TH, 1861:  The USS Powhatan, Pawnee, Pocahontas and Revenue Cutter Harriet Lane were ordered by Secretary of the Navy Welles to provision Fort Sumter; squadron commander was given to Captain Samuel Mercer in the Powhatan.
