Park Day 2019 at Fort Fisher Saturday, April 6

Looking for something to do in southeast North Carolina tomorrow, April 6, and for a good cause?

Head on out to Kure Beach, all the way down to near the end of US Highway 421 on Federal Point, also known as Pleasure Island these days.

And that place you'd be going is Fort Fisher, my number one favorite Civil War place.  I'd sure love to be there, but alas, it is a question of way too many miles between there and here for me in northeastern Illinois.

From 8:30 to noon, they'll put you to work (no pay but you'll feel good to be doing some hood).

Be sure to wear comfortable work clothing and gave a pair of gloves

A luncheon will be provided from Michelangelo's Pizza and participants will get a free Park Day tee-shirt.

Park Day at Fort Fisher on Saturday, April 7

The Friends of Fort Fisher announce that the annual Civil War Trust Park Day will take place on Saturday, April 7 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The purpose is to beautify and preserve the site and this is the 21st year of it.

Volunteers of all ability levels are needed to work on painting, raking and cleaning the engraved pavers on the Walk of Honor in front of the museum/visitors center.

Some gloves and tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own.

Participants need to register in advance.

At noon, lunch will be provided by the Friends of Fort Fisher.

Looking For a Few Good Volunteers in North Carolina-- Part 2

Continuing with Park Day 2017 in North Carolina.

The N.C. MARITIME MUSEUM in Southport--  Volunteers will be involved in ground clearing, planting flowers around the entry, planting vegetables and herbs in the interpretive garden.

Participants will receive t-shirts and a hot dog lunch.

BENNETT PLACE in Durham.  Trail maintenance, clearing the Bennett Family Cemetery and fixing the fence around the historic kitchen garden.  Participants will receive tee shirts and light snacks and drinks.

BENTONVILLE BATTLEFIELD--  Four Oaks.  Clearing a new trail and installing interpretive signs.  Bring small hand or garden tools.  T-shirts and lunch.

Looking For a Few Good Volunteers at Fort Fisher-- Part 1

From the March 10, 2017, WWAY Wilmington, N.C. "Civil War Park Day Needs Volunteers In The Cape Fear."

On Saturday, April 1, volunteers will be needed at four historic sites in the state, including, in the Cape Fear area,  Fort Fisher and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport.

These sites are looking for history enthusiasts, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, youth groups among others.  Park Day is sponsored in part by the Civil War Trust, a major preservation group.

At Fort Fisher, volunteers will work in debris removal, leaf raking, light painting and scraping.  Basic tools will be provided.  Participants will receive a Park Day t-shirt and lunch put on by the Friends of Fort Fisher.

Work will be between 8:30 and noon.

Sign Up for Cleaning Parks in Wilmington, N.C., Area

From the March 13, 2016, Port City Daily "Sign up for cleaning at three local historic sites on Civil War Park Day."

Five sites in North Carolina are participating in the annual Civil War Trust Park Day event on April 2..  In the Wilmington area it will take place at Fort Fisher (as mentioned in my Monday blog, Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson site and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport.

This is a promotion of the Civil War Trust and has been done ever since 1996.

**  Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson:  Event goes from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will focus on debris removal, ruin stabilization, leaf and weed removal, cleaning the wayside signs and park benches, and sanding and sealing the entrance sign.

**  Fort Fisher: Runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon.  debris removal, leaf raking, light painting and scraping.  Gloves and tools provided on site.  Lunch will be given by the Friends of Fort Fisher.

**  North Carolina Maritime Museum--Southport, N.C. (at site of Fort Johnston).  9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Grounds cleaning, landscaping at the museum entry and planting a popular history garden (a project of Girl Scout Clarissa Sommers for her Gold Award).

Fort Fisher Seeking Volunteers for Park Day

From the March 17, 2016, WECT, NBC, Wilmington, N.C.  "Volunteers needed to help beautify Fort Fisher."

Volunteers are needed at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site on April 2, 2016, to work from 8:30 a.m. to noon as part of the Civil War Trust Park Day.  This event is part of the organization's efforts to provide workers for both Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields across the nation.

Activities at Fort Fisher will include light sanding, painting and debris removal.

Registration must be made in advance and a free luncheon will be provided.
